ART IN EVOLUTION

About

Moscow

Barkli Gallery is a modern residential building inspired by the Art of the early 20th century, namely by the work of Leon Bakst. The world celebrated the artist’s 150th birth anniversary the same year this project was set up.  It's a unique collection of the best ideas closely intertwining past, present, and future.

FROM BAKST TO BARKLI

Leon Bakst was a member of Diaghilev's triumphant Parisian Seasons and the legendary creative community “The Art World”. Proximity to the Tretyakov Gallery also had an incredible artistic influence on the development of the project. His graceful legend is expressed in the image of a patron of the house and is brought to fruition. This is the first residential building project in Russia from the award-winning British bureau Aedas RHWL, whose magnificent designs of architecture can be seen all over the world.

The surroundings of the Barkli Gallery focused on culturally and historically significant sites. A local resident takes an evening stroll among architectural masterpieces of various styles and epochs from the “Joy of All Who Sorrow” church to the Dolgovs’ estate and Baron von Reck manor.

Barkli Corporation and Timur Bekmambetov's studio BAZELEVS, with the participation of the ballet premier of the Bolshoi Theater Artyom Ovcharenko "revived" a patron of the house in a dance in which different facets of art found common ground. The image was inspired by Lev Bakst's sketches for the ballets of Diaghilev's Russian Seasons, or rather "The Afternoon of a Faun" to the music of Debussy.

LOBBY INTERIORS

Art Nouveau motifs and the Neoclassical geometry of the building confidently interact with the interpretation of classics in the lobby interior, created by the Dutch designer Marcel Wanders. Harmony of high style framed by rare wooden boiserie wall panels and natural floor marble Bianca Carrara begins right behind the main entrance of the collectors’ building, which is decorated with unique Tiffany-style stained-

glass windows. This is a real gallery of masterpieces, where you can conduct excursions for art connoisseurs under the light of the luxurious Le Roi Soleil crystal chandelier by Baccarat while listening to the enchanting accompaniment of the German Steinway & Sons grand piano, handcrafted from precious woods.
