The State Tretyakov Gallery presented the project “Laboratory of the Future. Kinetic Art in Russia”, dedicated to one of the most significant and at the same time the least studied trend in the history of Russian art in the second half of the 20th century. The exposition, which included about 400 works, demonstrated a broad panorama of the development of kinetic art in the 1960s-1970s, tracing its connection with the avant-garde experiments of the beginning of the century and the artistic practices of our time.

As known, the basis of kinetic art is the idea of transformation: both the artistic form and the process of perception. Having emerged simultaneously in various regions of the world in the post-war era, kineticism was largely associated with the idea of the development of innovation, scientific and technological progress. Along with the scientific avant-garde, kinetic artists invented visual systems for transmitting information, explored the features of figurative thinking, and experimented with the latest technologies and materials. The exhibition also featured bright interdisciplinary projects related to the search for a trajectory for the development of Russian contemporary Art through new plastic forms and meanings.
